Online Master of Arts in Higher Education

Program Description

The College of Education and Human Development's fully online Master of Arts in Higher Education program is largely oriented toward the challenges of leadership and administration in contemporary higher education in the United States. The program offers students a solid understanding of the historical and philosophical foundations of American higher education; administrative skills such as planning, human resource management, finance and budgeting, and information management; the responsibilities and roles of college and university faculty; the use of contemporary methods and technology to conduct and use research relevant to postsecondary education; and issues of cultural diversity and the global context of postsecondary administration.

Career Opportunities

The M.S. in Higher education is well-suited for those who are already employed in staff or administrative positions in colleges and universities as well as for those seeking employment in higher education. Graduates of the program work in a wide variety of administrative positions at 2-year and 4-year colleges and universities; public and private schools; in virtually every department of higher education institutions.

Admission Requirements
The Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL ) is required of all foreign students from countries in which English is not the native language. Applicants holding a baccalaureate or advanced degree from an accredited college or university in the United States are exempt from the TOEFL requirement.

ELFH 600 - Introduction to Research Methods and Statistics (3 credit hours)
Critical examination of research in education. Emphasis given to historical, empirical, and experimental methods of research; to techniques of research design and statistical analysis; and to skills in writing reviews and critiques of research literature.

ELFH 605 - Leading Training and Performance (3 credit hours)
Study of the modern theories of leadership, organization, management and administration of workforce training and performance improvement, with relationship to organizational management functions. Prerequisites: Ability to send e-mail, use a word processing program, and do simple searches.

ELFH 606 - Program Evaluation (3 credit hours)
Examines the theories, techniques, methods, and program evaluation models currently used in assessing the effectiveness of learning programs and products in educational and other organizational settings.

ELFH 607 - Principles of Educational Leadership (3 credit hours)
Examines concepts, analytical tools, case material, and organizational theories from the public, business, and educational administration sectors.

ELFH 611 - Performance Improv. in Human Resource Development (3 credit hours)
Systematic approach to developing human resources in a work environment with emphasis on individual, process and organizational level performance improvement and integration of performance improvement techniques in human resource development.

ELFH 659 - Planning (3 credit hours)
Focuses on the development of planning, implementation, and leadership skills needed to direct strategic decision-making.

ELFH 661 - Adult Development and Learning (3 credit hours)
Study of current cognitive, psychomotor and affective theories and their application to training programs in industry. Required for the M.Ed. in Occupational Education.

ELFH 662 - Organizational Analysis (3 credit hours)
Examination of the process and techniques used to conduct an organizational task and person analysis and to identify training needs in a non-school environment.

ELFH 663 - Methods of Facilitation (3 credit hours)
Development of the presentation skills needed to conduct training programs in non-school settings. Focus placed upon the difference between teaching and facilitation of adult learning. This course is required for the Master of Education in Occupational Training and Development.

ELFH 672 - Instructional Design and Development (3 credit hours)
Emphasizes systematic processes for the design and development of instruction with application to education and training. Current theory and research on instructional design and development, in accordance with principles of teaching and learning.

ELFH 678 - The American College and University (3 credit hours)
Examination of historical development of the American college, community college, and university, including major ideas and concepts underlying these developments and major problems affecting present institutions of higher learning.

ELFH 680 - Legal Issues in Postsecondary Education (3 credit hours)
Examination of constitutional and statutory provisions and court decisions affecting educational leadership in postsecondary education.

ELFH 682 - Org. & Administration of Higher Education Institutions (3 credit hours)
Exploration of organizational and administrative theory as related to colleges and universities and assessment of the roles of major administrative units of the institution. Purpose is to aid students seeking to become college or university administrators or faculty members.

ELFH 684 - Educational Resource Management in Postsecondary Education (3 credit hours) Study of resources, practices and procedures of finance and economics as related to postsecondary education. Provides investigation of specific and current educational finance issues affecting educational institutions.

ELFH 690 - Internship in Postsecondary Education (6 credit hours)
Provides on-the-job learning and professional development for future postsecondary administrative personnel. Seminars are held periodically under the direction of the University Coordinator. Pass/Fail grading.

ELFH 699 - Thesis or Professional Paper (4 credit hours)
Culminating paper for masters degree (as per program plan), by arrangement with advisor.
