To apply for most financial aid programs:

  1. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This application is used to determine eligibility for both state and federal assistance from grant, work-study, and loan programs. This form is available in U of L's Student Aid Office, as well as the Financial Aid Offices of other colleges and universities, in the counseling offices of local high schools, and at additional sites at Ft. Knox, Shelby Campus, and the Belknap Campus Ekstrom Library or Adult Commuter Center. You may receive this form by mail by calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.
  2. FAFSA Express is available to download from the web for those with compatible IBM computers and a printer. Students may also complete a FAFSA on the web at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/. The federal Student Guide publication contains a wealth of information concerning all of the federal Title IV aid programs.
  3. When completing the FAFSA, you will need to know our Title IV code number. It is 001999. Late applicants may file the FAFSA electronically in U of L's Financial Aid Office. This service is available on a walk-in first-come first-serve basis.
  4. Almost four weeks after mailing the FAFSA, you will receive a Student Aid Report or SAR. If accurate, the SAR should be retained for your records. If corrections are needed, the SAR should be submitted to our office. For those who file electronically, the SAR results are received in approximately two weeks.
  5. The Financial Aid Office will receive whether you file your FAFSA by mail or electronically, the results if you indicated U of L as one of your six school choices.
  6. From this point, the Financial Aid Office will automatically request any additional information necessary to complete your aid file.
