Interior Design Basics

Learn to develop a "look" and "feel" appropriate for your desired scheme. Hands-on learning occurs in a design studio complete with a resource room and showroom.

After learning some basic priciples and elements of design, you'll discover innovative uses of interior rugs, stained glass, paint, and more.

During the final weeks you'll select accessories, create color schemes, mix patterns, layout furniture and traffic patterns, mix furniture and lighting; and create a pleasant design within your budget.

ENROLLMENT IS LIMITED TO 12.

Growing Wild: Returning Your Yard to Nature

Being "green" is becoming more and more popular as concern for our environment grows. There are many ways you can play a role. This class will explore the value of backyard nature and turning the lawn to nature in a slow and methodical manner without breaking the bank. We will look at ways of renovating your property to increase habitat for wildlife in a way that won't be offensive to most neighbors.

The class will include a field trip to see where this has been done. This class is geared for the do-it-yourself gardner.

Instructor: Alan Goldstein has been gardening with nature for more than 30 years.

Antiques in the Marketplace

This specialized course will assist you in discerning the finer points of antique furniture, showcase English and American silver, refine your appreciation of porcelain and glass and delve into the inner workings of antique clocks. Market trends and the impact of the Internet on buying and selling will also be discussed.

Location: Shelby Campus

Instructor: Kenneth S. Hays, has appeared on the Antiques Roadshow, taught classes for continuing education at the university level and owns a regionally known auction gallery and appraisal business. He serves as a guest lecturer for historic homes and has written numerous articles on antiques.
