Introduction to Playing the Mandolin

This beginner's class covers the basic picking technique, how to tune the mandolin, the most important mandolin chords, how to play easy melodies and much more, including the enjoyment of making music! An Introduction to Screenwriting: Act I

Introduction to Drawing

Explore the fundamentals of drawing using dry (charcoal, graphite) and wet (ink) monochromatic media. Participants also will study the visual possibilities of contour, mass, proportion, light and shadow as well as the expressive potential of their materials. Developing Commercial Voice Talent for Radio and TV

Discover the world of commercial voice work as you learn about auditions, taking direction, the recording studio and the key ingredients of a voice demo. All participants will record a variety of commercial reads including straight pitch, characters, dialogue spots, PSAs, and cartoon voices.

Acting Fun for Everyone New!

In this highly successful course, students will learn the fundamentals to acting, engage in short five minute scenes, receive a free tour of Actors Theatre, and view movies to learn how to break into the acting world.

Geology of Kentucky

Kentucky's landscape is influenced by rocks beneath the soil and processes that build mountains and erode them back to the sea.

This new class explores the Commonwealth's ancient past. What was it like over the past billion years? How do we know? Why aren't there gold mines in Kentucky? Can you find crystals or dinosaurs?

In addition to class time, you’ll discover the past first-hand during three field trips to central Kentucky. Site visits may include parks, quarries, exposures along the highway, and a less-known (but spectacular) part of the Commonwealth's cave country. Field trip dates are March 15, 29 and April 5.

Abstract Painting

Learn formal and expressive techniques of abstract painting. Discover understandable techniques for using space, mass, color and line. Painting Portraits New!

Students will learn to paint the human face and body. Attention will be given to shape, form, light and shadow. This class will also explore the use of color and composition for psychological effect.

Landscape Painting Oil and/or Acrylic

This class will focus on the potential that the local landscape offers for visual expression in paint.

You will receive instruction in linear and atmospheric perspective; long and short depth of field; light, color, time of day and season; and the horizon--water, sky and ground. Through the use of photographic references and on-site study, you will work to produce a small number of paintings that successfully translate their landscape.

You will have the option to work in oil or acrylic or both. A list of supplies will be provided at time of registration.

What If They Had Won: An Alternative Look at Post WWII

The world as we know it today was shaped by the events that took place between September 1939 and September 1945, but how different would the world be if, at key moments during that period, history had taken an alternative path? In this class we will review the actual details of some of the most pivotal events of the war, and then examine the possible, even probable impact on the world had the outcome of those events been different.

On to Victory: Hollywood Goes to War

From the anti-war films of the 1920's, realistically portraying the horrors of WW I, through the "America must prepare for war" in the late 1930's, the "Flag Waving" and/or "Buy Bonds" propaganda films made during WW II, to the post war era & the return to realistic films that looked at our enemies, and ourselves in a different light. Using clips from various examples of each type, this class will examine the full spectrum of the "War Film" & the people who made them. It is for both the film fan & the history buff.

Basic/Intermediate Watercolor Techniques

This course is for beginning and intermediate watercolor artists who want to improve their range of techniques in the application of watercolor paint to paper and learn how to move the paint on the paper. Students can build their repertoire of techniques to achieve specific effects. Individual instruction will be provided in a group setting with demonstrations of technique along with observation and critique of technique development. Personal feedback will be provided in a constructive and interactive manner.

Buddhism 101

This introductory class will offer a textual, historical, and anthropological survey of the Buddhist tradition. Topics covered will include origins and history, doctrine, ethical beliefs, meditation, ritual, monastic, and popular traditions. Students will learn about basic Buddhist concepts, terms and teachings concerning the Buddha, His Teachings, and the Sangha, i.e. the community of clergy. Also, students will be able to demonstrate the relevant historical motives and links underlying these concepts as Buddhism spread from India to other parts of Asia and eventually to the world outside of Asia.
